Our Ladies Homeless shelter will commence on June 1 and we plan to continue to the end of October. I hope that you can be a part of it, as the need for volunteers is greater than ever. Our plan is to be open Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays in June, July August, and Thursdays and Fridays in September and October. It seems odd to open in the summer instead of the winter, right? We are doing this because we had many empty beds last time. This was the direct result of the change in NYC policy which closed 1/2 of the drop-in centers and lowered their capacity to "process" the homeless for placement in the Emergency Shelter Network (ESN) church beds such as ours. Obviously, people are homeless all year round, but many of the ESN churches are only open in the winter. That leaves a number of people without a place to sleep the rest of the year. Hence, we step up to fill that need. We were promised by CAMBA, our NYC drop-in center affiliate, to fill our 8 beds virtually each night if we open in the summer.
