Homeless Shelter
"They reach our hearts and we touch their lives"
This is how we feel about the Women's Homeless Shelter program at the Church on the Hill which is part of a New York City program, The Partnership for the Homeless.
We may not realize it, but we tend to take many blessings in our lives for granted. We experience joys and pains, gains and losses, but most of us in this society always have a roof over our heads, ample food, and clothing throughout our lives.
What about people who lost it all, right here in our midst? Overwhelming personal losses, loss of livelihood and other factors all lead to homelessness. In Matthew 25:40, Jesus talks about feeding the poor and clothing the naked, saying, "I will tell you, whenever you did this for one of the least important of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did it for me." (Good News Bible, today's English version)
If you are called to do something to help, now is your chance. We are in great need of volunteers for our Homeless Shelter. Our shelter program runs from January through April each Thursday and Friday night. Two volunteers serve each evening. Up to eight women are welcomed to our program. Greeters and chaperones arrive at 7:15 p.m. and stay a few hours to visit, set up food, and chat with our guests. Chaperones spend the night and in the morning provide a breakfast before the women return to their site in Manhattan. New volunteers are always paired with experienced ones. Just bring your warm heart and be part of this wonderful experience.
